Reporting to senior management, the Propagation Manager will oversee all aspects of plant propagation, nursery hygiene, environmental control, and team supervision within the propagation department.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, supervise and mentor a team of propagation technicians.
Manage vegetative propagation programs (cuttings, division and other clonal techniques) for native and exotic species.
Oversee seed propagation programs including native grasses, shrubs and trees.
Develop and implement propagation schedules aligned with production targets.
Monitor and control environmental parameters (temperature, humidity, irrigation, misting systems and light levels) within propagation facilities.
Ensure strict nursery hygiene and biosecurity protocols are maintained.
Conduct regular quality assurance inspections to maintain premium plant standards.
Identify and manage plant pests, pathogens and physiological disorders in accordance with best practice and regulatory requirements.
Maintain accurate production records, propagation data and stock inventory.
Contribute to continuous improvement of propagation systems, procedures and success rates.
Your Profile
Minimum 5 years’ hands‑on industry experience in commercial nursery propagation in a management position.
Advanced experience managing mist benches, climate‑controlled propagation houses, and irrigation systems.
Strong working knowledge of subtropical native and exotic species identification.
Advanced understanding of plant physiology as it relates to successful propagation.
Proven leadership experience in supervising and leading small teams.
Demonstrated ability to meet production targets and maintain quality benchmarks.
Sound knowledge of pest and disease identification and integrated management principles.
Excellent organisational and record‑keeping skills.
Strong communication skills and a genuine interest in mentoring staff.
Relevant horticultural qualifications (Certificate III, IV or Diploma in Horticulture) highly regarded.
