The Business Data Analyst is responsible for designing robust data models, defining and tracking KPIs and transforming business questions into clear analytical requirements and user stories. The role works closely with business stakeholders to understand processes and goals, delivering insightful analyses and self‑service reports using tools such as Power BI and modern AI assistants at an intermediate level.
Key responsibilities
1. Design, maintain and improve logical and dimensional data models that support reporting, dashboards and advanced analysis.
2. Define, document and track business KPIs and metrics, ensuring consistent definitions across teams and systems.
3. Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business processes, pain points and goals, and translate them into clear analytical use cases and user stories.
4. Build and enhance interactive reports and dashboards (primarily in Power BI) to monitor performance and provide self‑service insights.
5. Perform ad‑hoc and deep‑dive analyses to explain trends, identify drivers and recommend data‑driven actions.
6. Use AI tools (e.g., copilots, chat‑based assistants) at a medium level to speed up analysis, documentation and insight generation, while validating outputs for accuracy.
7. Document data models, KPIs, report logic and business rules in a clear, maintainable way.
8. Support testing and validation of new data products or reporting features, ensuring data quality and correct business logic.
Required skills and experience
9. Strong skills in data modelling (star/snowflake schemas, relationships, hierarchies) and translating business requirements into analytical data structures.
10. Proven experience defining, implementing and tracking KPIs in a business context (e.g., sales, operations, finance, marketing).
11. Solid business analysis capabilities: stakeholder interviews, process understanding, requirements gathering, user story creation and prioritisation.
12. Intermediate proficiency with Power BI (or similar BI tools): building data models, measures, visuals and dashboards.
13. Medium‑level skills in AI prompting (e.g., using chat‑based AI tools) for exploratory analysis, documentation, basic code or DAX suggestions, with critical evaluation of results.
14. Good SQL and Excel skills for querying, transforming and validating data.
15. Strong communication skills to explain complex data topics simply and to build trust with non‑technical stakeholders.
16. Experience working in agile teams, contributing user stories, acceptance criteria and participating in sprint ceremonies.
17. Exposure to data warehousing or modern data platforms (e.g., lake house or MS Fabric) and data governance concepts.
