About the role
The Department of Evolutionary Anthropology at the Faculty of Life Sciences seeks to appoint a pre‑doctoral researcher to work with Associate Professor Katerina Douka on the ERC‑funded RIFT‑TO‑RIM Consolidator project (2025‑2030). The main objective of the project is to discover and analyse new modern human fossils from under‑researched sites in Africa, using state‑of‑the‑art biomolecular techniques such as palaeoproteomics, radiocarbon dating, stable‑isotope geochemistry, and ancient DNA.
Your responsibilities
* Recording and sampling archaeological materials (bones, teeth, sediments) for proteomics, ancient DNA, and radiocarbon analysis.
* Conducting scientific analyses, including ZooMS and dating.
* Travelling to field sites in Africa and liaising with local research teams.
* Collaborating with colleagues in the department on applied projects incorporating archaeological science, proteomics, genetics and dating.
* Writing scientific reports and journal articles, presenting conference papers and posters.
* Representing the group at external meetings and seminars.
Essential selection criteria
* Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in archaeology, prehistoric archaeology, zooarchaeology, or biomolecular archaeology.
* Experience and interest in biomolecular archaeology (ZooMS, radiocarbon, stable‑isotope analyses).
* Ability to travel to field sites and spend time in museums and laboratories.
* Strong interest in prehistoric archaeology (Palaeolithic/Stone Age).
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reports, publications and presentations.
* Fluency in English.
Desirable selection criteria
* Previous or current collaborations with African institutions and archaeological teams.
* Fieldwork experience in Palaeolithic sites, zooarchaeology, or ZooMS.
* Experience with databases and IT tools.
