About the role
The Director of Communications is responsible for all internal and external communications within the Office of the Chief Minister including providing strategic direction and management of the broader team of Media Advisors.
The role leads, develops and executes media and content strategies consistent with the Government’s objectives.
A sound knowledge of the political landscape and political trends is essential.
Previous experience as a senior media advisor and/or senior journalist/editor will be considered favourably.
To be considered for the role, you will have:
1. Demonstrated leadership, consultation and facilitation skills, with an ability to define directions and develop collaborative whole of government communications strategies.
2. Highly developed communication, interpersonal, negotiation and collaboration skills to operate effectively and achieve priorities.
3. Demonstrated strategic, conceptual, analytical and creative skills, including an ability to understand and respond appropriately to the political, social and organisational environment.
4. Highly developed management skills with a strong ability to build the capacity and culture of the team to deliver a service that is timely, high quality and aligned with the Government’s strategic objectives.
5. Ability to anticipate and respond proactively in a crisis with an understanding of the environment and the ability to develop communication systems that provide clear public information.
6. Proven ability to negotiate outcomes with the media in high pressure situations.
7. Demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgement with sensitivity to individual, community and political needs.
8. Sound knowledge or understanding of government and political processes and procedures.
Key Responsibilities
1. Provide the Chief Minister and Ministers with high level communications advice on strategic issues, policy proposals and submissions.
2. Develop short, medium and long-term communications strategies to deliver on the government’s agenda.
3. Provide high level journalistic, editing and copy writing expertise and manage the writing responsibilities of the Office of the Chief Minister.
4. Keep the Chief Minister and Ministers abreast of significant developments and issues relevant to their portfolios or of public interest.
5. Develop strategic and effective working relationships with key local internal and external stakeholders while ensuring adherence to approved key messages during engagements.
6. Lead the media and communications team within the Office of the Chief Minister.
7. Provide expert advice, guide, mentor and coach others, ensuring a positive team culture and strong performance.
