GPAP is seeking to appoint 2 new directors at its 2023 AGM. The GPAP Board is dedicated to upholding GPAP's values, mission and purpose, and to projecting a compelling vision of an earth capable of nurturing life in all its diversity and using our strengths to challenge the fossil fuel order that stands in the way.
About GPAP
Greenpeace is the leading independent environmental campaigning organisation that uses non-violent direct action and creative confrontation to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions essential to a green and peaceful future. GPAP is the national/regional Greenpeace organisation for the Australia Pacific region, operating across multiple countries with its head office in Sydney. GPAP's values are:
* Independence: We do not accept money from governments, corporations or political parties because it would compromise our core values.
* Bearing witness: Our peaceful protests raise awareness and inform decision-makers.
* Non-violent direct action: We believe violence is morally wrong and achieve objectives through non-violent action targeting environmental crimes.
GPAP is a charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). It has an annual turnover of approximately $22 million (YE 2021). Financial reports are available on the ACNC website.
About the position
The GPAP Board is the guarantor of the organisation's integrity. Directors are appointed for a 3-year term, with the option of a second 3-year term. Key responsibilities include:
* Ensure GPAP's mission remains clear, relevant and well-directed.
* Provide guidance on GPAP's direction.
* Monitor programmes to ensure alignment with the mission and achievement of short-term goals and long-term purpose.
* Set objectives and performance indicators for the CEO and review performance.
* Ensure resources are obtained and used effectively to sustain GPAP's mission.
* Ensure financial and reporting integrity and robust internal controls.
* Maintain robust risk identification and management systems.
* Comply with ACNC Governance Standards.
Directors must uphold fiduciary duties, act in good faith, avoid conflicts of interest, and demonstrate duty of care, diligence and skill.
GPAP Board meeting cadence
The GPAP Board meets at least six times per year. Meetings have historically been a hybrid of in-person and virtual formats, with hybrid as the expected norm going forward. All board expenses are covered by GPAP. Remuneration may be considered for candidates requiring it, in line with diversity, equity and inclusion principles. Board meetings typically include a formal evening dinner the night before a full day meeting.
Board committees and working groups
There are six Board committees/working groups, currently including:
* Finance and Audit Committee
* Governance Committee
* Nominations Committee
* Philanthropy Working Group
* Risk Working Group
* Generational Vision Working Group (long-term planning)
Board members are expected to be a member of two of these committees/working groups.
General Assembly
Every GPAP Board member is required to be a member of the GPAP General Assembly (GA), which comprises the GPAP membership. The GA meets once per year.
About you
Skills sought in this recruitment round include:
* Finance, financial management and audit
* Digital marketing and/or campaigns
* Deep understanding of the cultural, political, economic and social context of Pasifika people (preference for applicants located in the Pacific; those in Australia will also be considered)
You will be asked to nominate your primary skill during the recruitment process. You must also be able to:
* Fully commit to our mission, goal and values
* Demonstrate leadership
* Work collaboratively and speak up by asking hard questions
Additional areas that are favourably viewed include:
* Corporate governance in the not-for-profit sector
* Environmental (or other) campaigning
* Fundraising
* Understanding of First Nations cultural, political, economic and social contexts
* Research and/or scientific literacy
It is essential that applicants have sufficient time to commit to GPAP Board work (approximately 15 to 20 hours per month).
