Senior Research Engineer / Scientist - Ion-trap chips (all genders) // Job-ID: 176-1


Your future responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced research engineer to lead the development of ion-trap chips (ITCs) at SAL. You will join a highly motivated, international team dedicated to advancing the building blocks of next-generation quantum technology. Your work will be part of an international collaborative network.

* Coordinate ITC development and fabrication across research units and cleanroom facilities.
* Execute small-scale fabrication and prototypes of ITC devices in cleanroom facilities using 200 mm wafer-level technology.
* Coordinate testing of developed ITC devices.
* Co-develop the design, fabrication, and technological advancements of ion trap chips.
* Perform quality control and documentation for statistical process control.
* Communicate and report research findings to scientific and non-scientific audiences.
* Collaborate and align with industry and academic partners.
* Manage projects and acquire R&D funding.


Your profile

* PhD in physics, quantum technology, electronics engineering, or related fields.
* At least 3 years of experience in semiconductor manufacturing and trapped-ion quantum technology.
* Experience in industrial environments is advantageous.
* Proficiency in English; German skills or willingness to learn are assets.
* Motivated team player with strong communication skills.
* Willingness to relocate to Austria/Villach and travel as needed.

This position is covered by the Collective Agreement for non-university research employees, starting at occupational group E (E1 salary = EUR 3,963 gross/month, paid 14 times/year) based on a 38.5-hour workweek. The minimum gross annual salary is EUR 61,000, with additional benefits depending on experience and qualifications.
