About the Center for Digital Safety & Security
Located in Vienna, our center develops state‑of‑the‑art information and communication technologies to ensure secure and reliable systems in a digitally connected world. We focus on Distributed IT Systems, Internet of Things (IoT), Cybersecurity, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Blockchain, Quantum & Photonic, Wireless (6G), and Digital solutions for crisis and disaster management.
Cyber Security Research Field
Part of the Competence Unit “Security and Communication Technologies”, this field specialises in applied research for digital security. We pioneer concepts, algorithms, and systems for anomaly detection, cyber threat intelligence, penetration testing, and cryptography. We simulate modern ICT and OT infrastructures and cyber‑attacks to conduct exercises that help companies strengthen critical infrastructure resilience.
Responsibilities
* Support the development and automation of attack and test scenarios on our cyber range under guidance from an interdisciplinary research team.
* Collaborate to further develop tools or scripts for attack simulation and reporting.
* Gain insights into red‑team methodology, exploit development, and security assessments of applications, networks, OT and IoT systems.
* Apply academic knowledge to real‑world security challenges.
* Contribute to applied research that shapes next‑generation defence mechanisms for connected systems.
Qualifications
* Student in Informatics, IT‑Security, or a similar field.
* Current bachelor’s degree holder on a master’s study program.
* Good programming skills in Python, Rust, or Go.
* Basic knowledge of network technology, operating systems, scripting, and vulnerability analysis.
* Experience with tools such as Burp Suite, Metasploit, Nmap, Nessus, OWASP ZAP or comparable is an advantage.
* Analytical thinking, enjoyment of tinkering, and systematic vulnerability detection.
* Interest in multidisciplinary teamwork and cross‑topic collaboration.
* Good written and verbal English and/or German skills.
What to Expect
* Duration: minimum 2 months.
* Start date: Summer 2026, with flexibility on the exact date.
* Remuneration: EUR 1,415 gross per month for 38.5 hours per week. Flexible working conditions and additional company benefits are offered.
