Overview

University: Johannes Kepler University
Country: Austria
Deadline: 2025-10-19

Austria’s Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz is offering fully funded PhD positions in the field of data-assisted real-time simulations of particulate flows. This program is designed for individuals eager to advance the frontiers of computational modeling, with a direct impact on reducing energy consumption and CO₂ emissions in major industrial processes.

Research Context

Strongly committed to advancing computational modeling and simulation, the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Data-Assisted Simulations of Complex Flows at JKU leads research in integrating data-driven methods with traditional simulation approaches. The lab’s projects focus on data-assisted surrogates such as recurrence CFD and universal physics transformers to enable real-time simulation capabilities and digital process twins for complex particulate flows, including fluidized bed reactors and rotary kilns.

This research is highly relevant for industries seeking to optimize processes, reduce energy usage, and minimize environmental impact by merging physics-based simulations with data-driven modeling.

Positions and Research Area

The four fully funded PhD positions are embedded within a dynamic and supportive research group. Selected candidates will have access to high-performance computing resources and opportunities to participate in international collaborations and conferences. The projects are supervised within the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Data-Assisted Simulations of Complex Flows at JKU.

Fields: Physics, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Science, Chemical Engineering.

Ideal Candidate

– Master’s degree in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Science, or a closely related field
– Solid foundation in classical simulation techniques such as CFD or CFD-DEM
– Proficiency in at least one scientific computing programming language
– Interest in, or willingness to learn, deep learning or data-driven modeling approaches
– (Optional) Experience with machine learning frameworks
– Candidates with a background in machine learning who wish to expand their expertise in physics-based simulations are encouraged to apply

Offer and Benefits

JKU offers a highly competitive package for PhD candidates, including a gross annual salary of EUR 3715 paid 14 times per year, access to advanced research infrastructure, and a collaborative academic environment that fosters professional development and international networking.
