Master Thesis – Application-driven optimization of a biosensor platform (all genders) // Job-ID: 247-0

This Master thesis project focuses on the application-driven optimization of a biosensor platform through the integration of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and/or electrochemical surface engineering strategies. The objective is to enhance sensor performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, stability and reproducibility, with a clear focus on practical applicability and technological robustness. You will work at the interface of biochemistry, materials chemistry and electrochemical analysis in a technology-oriented research environment. The project includes surface functionalization of sensor platforms, integration or synthesis of MOF-based materials, and systematic characterization of the modified system.

Your tasks will include:

* Your primary responsibilities include the independent planning and execution of experiments, optional electrochemical measurements, materials characterization and quantitative data evaluation.
* You will investigate structure-property relationships and translate experimental findings into targeted performance improvements.
* In addition, you will conduct literature research, document results according to reproducible research standards, and present findings within the research team. The work is embedded in a research unit focusing on sensor technologies with potential industrial relevance.


Your profile

We are looking for a motivated and solution-oriented student with a structured and reliable working style. Accuracy in experimental work, critical thinking and the ability to translate experimental results into practical improvements are highly valued. Team orientation and professional communication skills complete your profile.

* Must-Haves:
o Enrolled in a Master’s program in Chemistry, Technical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Materials Science or a related field at an EU university
o Eligibility to start a Master thesis according to university regulations
o Solid laboratory experience and confident handling of experimental setups
o Basic knowledge in materials chemistry, biochemistry or electrochemistry
o Strong analytical skills and structured data evaluation
o Good written and spoken English skills
o Willingness to relocate to Austria
* Nice-to-Haves:
o Experience in surface functionalization or materials characterization methods
o Basic understanding of metal-organic frameworks or porous functional materials
o Experience with electrochemical measurement techniques (e.g. impedance spectroscopy)
o Basic programming or data analysis skills (e.g. Python, Origin)
