About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
About the Position
The Driver and Corporate Services Officer is responsible for safely driving, regularly maintaining and proactively monitoring the Embassy’s vehicle fleet, delivering a high standard of driving and punctuality to ensure the safety of passengers at all times.
The position also contributes to the work of the Corporate Services section by providing support to one or more of the property, ICT, or general administration functions.
Key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to the following:
* Safely and professionally transport the Ambassador, staff and other guests to official engagements, functions, or scheduled appointments and events according to program schedules, including to countries of accreditation. This includes events outside of normal business hours and on weekends and public holidays as required.
* Operate official vehicles in full compliance with the local road rules and regulations and in accordance with Embassy policy and procedures.
* Maintain a punctual, reliable and professional manner, being mindful of appointment times and journey scheduling.
* Develop and maintain good knowledge of the location of offices, buildings and other sites visited by staff in Austria and in other countries of accreditation, actively using GPS, maps and local knowledge to plan and research driving routes and ensure timely arrival at specified destinations.
* Ensure vehicles are maintained in an immaculate condition including arranging regular servicing (checking oil, water, tyre pressure, brakes, lights and fuel), maintenance and repairs and ensuring accurate vehicle records including logbooks/ running sheets, insurance, registration and fuel purchases.
* Assist with procurement, repairs and maintenance for the Chancery and leased residential portfolio, including liaising with, booking, and supervising external service providers.
* Assist with a range of property, ICT and general administrative duties as directed to support the work of other colleagues, including assisting with meetings, events and high-level visits.
Required Qualifications/Experience
* Valid Austrian drivers licence with a clean driving record.
* Relevant professional experience such as VIP driving/chauffeuring and/or demonstrated excellent driving skills and proven safety record.
* Good working knowledge of English and German; working knowledge of another language of the Embassy’s countries of accreditation is desirable (Hungarian, Slovak, Slovene, Bosnian).
* Extensive knowledge of road network and traffic systems in Austria and an ability to use navigation technology and provide advice on travel routes.
* Basic vehicle maintenance skills, with the ability to perform routine checks and report defects.
* Strong client focus, with the ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion and judgment with a professional demeanour.
* Ability to perform tasks with a high level of accuracy and to independently manage own workload.
* Ability to follow written and verbal instructions in the performance of both routine and non-routine tasks.
* Experience in corporate service delivery functions, including property, ICT, or general administration.
* Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work as an effective member of a team and provide high quality services to a wide range of stakeholders.
* IT literacy and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
* Willingness to work flexible hours and undertake overtime as required.
Other
* The position requires a willingness to work flexibly outside standard business hours. The occupant of the position is required to coordinate working hours with other staff in the team to enable full coverage of the transport functions related to official representative activities.
Selection Criteria

A. Evidence of professional driving experience and knowledge of roads and routes in Austria and/or in other countries of accreditation. Demonstrated ability to drive safely while adhering to local traffic regulations and conditions and ability to use GPS navigation equipment.
B. Ability to communicate effectively in both English and German, both verbally and in writing, including basic interpretation and translation skills. Demonstrated ability to liaise with clients in a polite, personable and effective manner.
C. Demonstrated administrative and organisational skills including ability to work cooperatively within a team and deliver ad-hoc tasks as required. Demonstrated ability to manage or coordinate minor repairs and maintenance for property-related tasks.
D. Proficiency using IT software programs, including the Microsoft Office suite, and electronic documents and databases.
