Organisational Unit
The Faculty of Humanities at the University of Graz has a long tradition of dealing with digital methods and sources: since the 1990s, a technical IT infrastructure and subject-specific expertise in the development and implementation of digital methods for research content in the humanities has been built up and incorporated into university teaching, which was finally institutionally anchored in 2008 with the establishment of the “Center for Information Modeling in the Humanities”, which in turn was established as a department in 2019 and finally renamed the “Department of Digital Humanities” in 2024.
The Department of Digital Humanities is one of the leading Austrian locations for Digital Humanities, which is also active internationally in numerous international research infrastructures and professional associations and, in addition to a large number of third-party funded projects from various national and international funding bodies, has been able to acquire no less than 3 ERC grants since 2021. Semantic enrichment, formal description, algorithmic analysis, and mediation of digital representations of cultural artifacts is the central research topic of the institute.
