Senior Manager Product Development R&D – Pharmacy Automation at BD
Job Description Summary
Join BD’s mission to advance the world of health as a Technical Leader in Pharmacy Automation. In this role, you will lead the design and development of complex medical device portfolios, driving innovation from concept to launch.
Duties & Responsibilities
Lead the design, development, and delivery of scalable, robust software systems including control software, interfaces, and enterprise-level applications
Define and evolve software architecture and technology roadmaps, ensuring modularity, maintainability, and integration readiness
Ensure rigorous requirements definition and traceability across the development lifecycle, from stakeholder input to verification and validation
Represent R&D in the cross‑functional development team, collaborate to define technical product strategy and technology roadmaps
Provide strategic and tactical leadership to direct and indirect reports with the ability to deep dive into technical issues
Lead and work with R&D functional leaders to assign engineering disciplines to achieve portfolio goals
Mentor, develop and performance manage talent assigned to the portfolio
Able to develop an integrated R&D product development project plan and manage an extended team to deliver and execute efficiently and with sound quality
Understand and apply first‑principles engineering discipline to product development and drive sound engineering robustness in a balanced way
Drive and lead innovative problem resolution at an accelerated pace
Implement best‑in‑class R&D tools, processes & standards within the development portfolio
Responsible for IP generation that protects the portfolio and establishes an offensive market position
Expand engineering, problem‑solving, and lean agile development techniques and improve skill sets in and application of Design for Six Sigma development methodologies across the portfolio
Plan and administer yearly portfolio budget to ensure proper execution of deliverables aligned to business value
Work in a development environment which supports both organic and inorganic development opportunities
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
5 years related work experience in R&D technical engineering leadership roles or a PhD in a relevant engineering discipline with 3 years of industry experience
Understanding of full cycle product development and a clear understanding of quality management systems; Medical device new product development is desirable
Leadership experience in a complex development environment in partnership with a matrixed organization and external technical suppliers
Ability to lead multi‑discipline engineering teams that may consist of mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, software engineers to meet planned milestones
Demonstrated analytical, decision making, prioritization and problem‑solving skills
Strong business acuity and customer centricity
Experience with new product development milestone planning and project management methodologies (Agile and/or waterfall) for complex systems
Excellent cross‑functional communication skills, strong technical writing skills, attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to bring clarity to ambiguous areas to drive decisions
Willingness to travel up to 10‑20% (domestic and international)
