About the Role
Location: This is a globally remote role. You may work from home with international travel 2‑4 weeks per year for internal events.
* Collaborate proactively within a distributed team.
* Foster a software ecosystem that delivers a seamless user experience for all Ubuntu users.
* Evaluate contributions of other engineers to maintain high‑quality software standards.
* Shape the future of Ubuntu by proposing new ideas and advising on cross‑team work.
* Collaborate with Ubuntu and Debian communities, upstream projects, and commercially supported customers.
* Debug issues in open‑source and team‑maintained code.
* Help customers integrate apps, SDKs, build OS images, and optimize applications with Ubuntu Core, Desktop, and Server.
* Work with a team to maintain Ubuntu, silicon features, and silicon‑optimized packages across platforms and technologies such as:
o Servers, HPC and AI systems, IoT devices, PCs, SmartNICs, and automotive systems
o AI stacks
o Graphics, audio, and multimedia stacks
o Virtualisation and containers
o Hardware enablement stacks
o New architectures, architecture variants, and optimized toolchains
o Package management and dependencies
o Platform security (secure boot, FDE, Ubuntu Core, Confidential Computing)
What We Are Looking For in You
* Exceptional academic track record from high school and university.
* Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling alternative pathway.
* A passion for technology and working with brilliant people.
* Curiosity, flexibility, articulate communication, and accountability.
* A passion for soft skills, partnership building, and self‑motivation.
* Strong fundamentals in C, C++, and Python.
* Experience or interest in learning Linux distribution packaging.
* Experience or interest in open‑source maintenance, contribution, and licensing.
* Fundamental understanding of package management and dependency resolution.
Additional Skills That You Might Also Bring
* Experience with one or more of the following:
o Graphics, audio, or multimedia stacks
o Virtualisation and containers (Docker, OCI, Kubernetes)
o Hardware enablement for platforms and devices, including SmartNICs, NVMe storage, GPUs, audio components, and sensors
o Performance optimisation
o Toolchain development and maintenance
o Networking protocols and technologies (TCP/IP, DHCP, HTTP/REST)
o Security best practices
o IoT and embedded systems, including board‑level hardware, SoCs, BMCs, bootloaders, firmware, operating systems, applications, and services
