Your Responsibilities
* Research and publication activities, including the possibility of writing a postdoctoral thesis and receiving a postdoctoral degree (Habilitation) in American Studies
* Participation in research projects in American literary and cultural studies
* Teaching assignments in American literary and cultural studies
* Organizational and administrative work for the Professor of American Studies and Intermediality, including student advising
* Participation in applying for funding for research projects and administrative assistance in carrying out such projects
* Cooperation with one of the university-wide Fields of Excellence and/or with one of the Core Research Areas of the Faculty of Humanities
* Cooperation with research partners in Austria and abroad, including contributions to fostering extant cooperations established by the Professor of American Studies and Intermediality
Your Profile
* Ph.D. in American Studies; or equivalent academic qualifications in this field
* Extensive knowledge of recent American Studies theories, of U.S.-American literary history (all genres), and of U.S.-American culture from the beginnings to the present
* Research experience (as shown in the dissertation, in publications, and in conference papers) in the areas of ethnic North American literary and cultural history, of drama and theater, of poetry, and/or of intermediality studies
* Substantial experience in research and teaching in university contexts (research experience within third‑party funded projects is also welcome)
* Experience and expertise in editing scholarly texts, in preparing such texts for scholarly publications that meet the highest academic standards of the field are desirable
* Strong interest in interdisciplinary research
* Markedly research‑oriented mindset, motivation, and goal‑focused perspective
* Excellent skills in spoken and written English and German
* Social competence, particularly the ability to work in teams and to communicate clearly
* Reliability
* Organizational skills
* Ability to take initiative and to work independently

We offer an annual gross salary of at least € 70,200.20 for a full‑time position. An overpayment based on qualification and experience is possible.

Organisational Unit
The department, which is one of two American Studies departments in Austria, is committed to a broad interdisciplinary approach and devotes its efforts to both teaching and research to the study of the overall cultural and social development of the USA. All the courses at the Department of American studies are held in English. The department has a standing tradition of student exchanges and teaching agreements with many international universities through programs such as Joint Degree, Fulbright and Erasmus. We encourage our students to take advantage of the ample study abroad programs with our European and American partner universities. Our department members are active in a variety of national and international scholarly associations including the Austrian Association for American Studies (AAAS), the American Studies Association (ASA) and the European Association for American Studies (EAAS). In terms of academic outreach, the department has organized many national and international conferences as well as public lectures and film viewings.
