The PhD and Masters by Research projects are offered within the broad scope of Modelling for Metal Additive Manufacturing. There is potential to explore a range of different topics suited to the student’s interest and skillset. This may include but is not limited to:
* processing-microstructure-property relationships in metal additive manufacturing (MAM);
* microstructure evolution in additively manufactured alloys;
* microscale residual stresses under MAM conditions;
* mechanical behaviour of additively manufactured alloys under different types of mechanical loading (quasistatic, impact, fatigue);
* thermal modelling of metal 3D printing;
* additive manufacturing process optimisation;
* architectured materials.
The potential candidate must have experience with simulations and programming. The topics mentioned above include model development and optimisation. Previous experience in high performance computing is beneficial.
How To Apply
If you are eligible and interested, please send an expression of interest to Dr Olga Zinovieva (o.zinovieva@unsw.edu.au) with the following information:
* Brief statement of purpose/cover letter (please describe your interest and how your skills and experiences qualify you for the position);
* Academic CV;
* Academic transcripts;
* Your primary research interest and proposal (less than 150 words);

The candidate must meet the minimum requirements for the UNSW Scholarship with admission into Higher Degrees by Research (Masters by Research or a Doctoral degree):
* a four year Bachelor's degree with first or upper second class Honours from an Australian institution or equivalent research qualification experience. This qualification must be in a field relevant to the proposed area of research, including Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering. A Software Engineering degree might also be considered if the candidate is motivated to gain knowledge in the above-mentioned fields;
* English language requirements (e.g., IELTS, Overall 6.5, Speaking, Writing, Reading and Listening 6.0 or TOEFL, Overall 90, Reading, Listening, Speaking 22, Writing 23).
Benefits
The scholarship value is $39,206 (AUD) per annum (tax-free) for up to 3.5 years. Several types of scholarships are available https://www.unsw.edu.au/research/hdr/scholarships.
We are looking forward to the applications of candidates who are enthusiastic about science and to offering them the opportunity to use their theoretical knowledge in application-related tasks. Personal initiative and creative ideas are welcome and encouraged.
