Executive Page: Building an Academic Path for Neurologists in Europe

February 11, 2026

Dear EAN members, friends, and colleagues,

I am writing this Executive Page to update you on the EAN’s educational activities and academic path

Even though the EAN’s educational mission is to constantly be there for all neurologists – whether experts, mid-career or members of the Resident & Research Fellow Section (RRFS), and whatever their practice is in the public or private sector – we are dedicating resources to build a specific academic path. The reason is that it is often seen as difficult and long with the risk of having neurologists sometimes discouraged when they think of it, even though many of them know it is probably meant for them and it is a beautiful career to embrace.

Prof. Nathalie Nasr, Chair of the EAN Education Committee

This is the reason why, together with the EAN Board, EAN President Elena Moro, EAN President-Elect Kailash Bhatia, Secretary General Antonio Toscano, and Scientific Committee Chair Gereon Fink, we have put together an academic path, encompassing the following key elements:

* Training by the European Journal of Neurology to write review papers

At the same time, with the marked progress achieved by the educational Task Force on AI in Clinical Neurology co-chaired by Alice Accorroni and Maria Chiara Malaguti, the EAN’s academic path in neurology is expected to benefit from this educational evolution in AI.

This is in addition to the usual learning activities in eanCampus (more than 3,000 pieces of content), which include reinforcement of specific clinical skills, and in addition to the teaching courses that take place in autumn and spring and during the EAN Congress 2026 in Geneva this year.

For the Congress, the Teaching Course sub-Committee has made a fantastic selection from all topic proposals to prepare 59 sessions across 7 different session types. I am happy to say that the interactive Hands-On Courses that invite participants to bring their own laptops to use in the analysis of anonymised patient cases.

Our eLearning platform eanCampus has achieved a marked evolution in the last year to giving free access to its highly dense content to EAN’s Associate members (e.g., members of all of the 48 national neurological societies who are EAN Institutional Members). This has resulted in more than a twofold increase in the number of users. The shift in eanCampus toward more level 2 (advanced) and level 3 (expert level) content as compared to level 1 (fundamental) continues. At the same time we have applied specific ‘filters’ for the European Training Requirements for Neurology (ETRN – PDF) and for specific content that would be appropriate for undergraduate students. The aim being to secure a learning curriculum for our youngest members in a landscape whilst the content is driven towards a higher proportion of content meant for expert and mid-career neurologists and translational content being more and more seen as a genuine part of educational content in neurology. We also teamed up with our subspecialty partner societies to produce part of this content that is specifically identified in the eanCampus.

Currently, we are participating in the update of the ETRN, which enhances harmonisation in training in neurology across Europe. A reminder: the next European Board of Neurology Examination (EBN exam) will take place in May.

Finally, some other quick updates to bring to your attention:

* The annual EAN Autumn School has now moved to Vienna, Austria. This fantastic programme which always features great interaction between faculty and participants now includes a very educational networking event at the Vienna Pathological-Anatomical Collection.
* The 2 nd round of the Leadership Programme kicked off in summer 2025, and the new group is already well underway with the two-year programme.

On behalf of our team, together with Barbara Tettenborn, Roland Wiest and Julia Mayer, I wish you all a beautiful spring ahead, and I look forward to seeing many of you in Geneva for the EAN Congress 2026

Prof. Nathalie Nasr
Chair of the EAN Education Committee
