Internship Program Overview
The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. Internships are awarded to students studying toward a university degree or who have recently received a degree. The IAEA internship program provides practical work experience in line with the intern’s studies or interests and exposes interns to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations.
Purpose Of The Programme Is
* To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole.
* To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.
* The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.
Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which protects people and the environment from radiation exposure. The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material. The Regulatory Infrastructure and Transport Safety Section (RIT) provides safety standards, guidance and tools to foster regulatory infrastructures for the control of radiation sources, safe transport of radioactive material, and capacity building in radiation transport and waste safety. The Transport Safety Unit establishes and maintains safety standards related to the worldwide safe transport of radioactive material, and cooperates with Member States and international organizations to incorporate transport regulations.
Main Purpose
The internship supports the Unit Head in the project management of the eLearning platform for the safe transport of radioactive material. The intern assists in development, maintenance, and coordination of the platform, ensuring content is up-to-date, accurate, and accessible in English. The intern coordinates translation of course materials into other UN languages, facilitating wider international accessibility.
Functions / Key Results Expected
* Assist in analysis, planning, design, monitoring, and reporting on project activities related to the eLearning platform.
* Support the team in content management, including updating modules, tracking course progress, and ensuring quality standards.
* Coordinate with translators and experts to produce versions of training materials in UN official languages.
* Develop skills in eLearning tools, instructional design principles, and stakeholder coordination in the context of transport safety.
Qualifications And Experience
* University Degree in or currently studying Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Sciences, Project Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
* Basic knowledge of radiation and nuclear safety.
* Excellent written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) an asset.
* Understanding of project life cycles, planning, scheduling, and monitoring.
* Awareness of instructional design principles, learning management systems (LMS), course development, and multimedia tools.
* Awareness of methods to track progress, assess course effectiveness, and report results.
* Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), project management tools (MS Project, Trello, or similar), and basic familiarity with e-learning platforms.
* Anticipate needs of stakeholders of eLearning.
* Ability to interpret progress data, participation statistics, and feedback.
Applicant Eligibility
* Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution toward the completion of a first degree.
* Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
* Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.
* Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
* Applicants must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
