(Associate) Banking and Finance Lawyer (German speaker preferred) – based in Luxembourg
European Investment Bank (EIB) is seeking a full‑time temporary (Associate) Banking and Finance Lawyer based in Luxembourg. The position is contracted for 1 year, with no extension or conversion, and requires regular office presence. Relocation support is offered.
Position Overview
The Northern Europe Division (NE) handles legal documentation and issues for projects in Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and the EFTA countries. The Lawyer will assist the Head of Division and Head of Department, and provide legal support to operational directorates.
Responsibilities
* Draft and negotiate legal documentation for lending and financing operations, including:
o projects in Northern Europe, notably bilateral loans with banking counterparts, public entities and major corporates
o project finance operations, with assistance from external legal counsels
o structured finance operations, including securitisations
o other forms of financing, including risk‑sharing structures, on a funded and unfunded basis
* Provide structuring advice, drafting of documents, legal advisory support, conclusion of contracts, completion of all related legal formalities, and legal monitoring (including loan restructuring and post‑signature events).
* Manage contacts and negotiations.
* Prepare terms of reference for external counsel and other consultants, liaise and supervise their work when necessary.
* Complete administrative formalities vis‑à‑vis clients with legal nature or implications.
* Undertake research and conduct legal studies on issues arising in connection with EIB operations and the development of new financial instruments/templates.
* Develop and maintain relationships within EIB, its clients and external legal advisers, and represent EIB externally.
Qualifications
* University degree in law, minimum equivalent to a Bachelor, preferably Master level, and preferably qualified in German or Austrian law.
* Minimum 3 years of professional experience relevant for the job, preferably in bank lending, project finance, or capital markets, ideally with an international law firm or an in‑house legal department.
* Knowledge of civil and commercial law of a relevant jurisdiction is an advantage.
* Significant experience in drafting and negotiating contractual documentation in English and/or German; experience in financing documents is an advantage.
* Experience in structured finance and/or project finance/PPP transactions is an advantage.
* Very good knowledge of standard computer tools.
* Excellent written and spoken English; capacity to draft and negotiate in German is an advantage.
