Overview At the heart of Red Bull's global sports universe is the Sports Data Platform (SDP), the technical foundation that turns data into a competitive advantage. We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer to play a central role in building and shaping this platform. This is a unique opportunity to own and evolve a critical data system that serves Red Bull's sports and athletes worldwide. As the lead technical expert for the platform, you will be both the architect and a key builder. You are responsible for shaping the roadmap for our next-generation data systems and overseeing the code and quality for critical enhancements. Success in this position means delivering high-quality, scalable technical solutions that empower our data science and analytics stakeholders, while working in close partnership with teams across the business.
Responsibilities
Own the technical architecture : You own the technical blueprint for the platform's future, including designing solutions, documenting them clearly, and driving key architectural discussions to ensure alignment across teams.
Provide technical guidance for external partners : You steer external development partners, set engineering standards, perform code reviews, and ensure their work integrates with our high-quality bar.
Translate requirements into a technical roadmap : Collaborate with the Data Science team and other stakeholders to understand needs and translate them into a clear, actionable roadmap.
Shape and evolve core systems : Own and drive the complete technical lifecycle of the core data platform, ensuring pipelines, processing frameworks, and services mature in scalability, resilience, and enterprise readiness as demand grows.
Provide strategic technical guidance : Serve as a senior technical counterpart to product management, data science, and business leaders, guiding architectural decisions and communicating platform capabilities, constraints, and trade‑offs. Help steer delivery of strategic initiatives by aligning stakeholders, clarifying scope, and ensuring execution aligns with technical direction.
Knowledge and expertise
A minimum of 6 years of experience in a data engineering role
Fluent English skills, preferably fluent German skills
Strong partnership and collaboration skills: ability to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders across regions and sports
Expert-level technical skills: modern data modeling, ETL/ELT development, and data warehousing principles
Proven GCP expertise: hands-on experience building and deploying data platforms on Google Cloud Platform (GCP); deep proficiency with BigQuery
Proactive, responsible and positive mindset: ownership of complex technical projects and pragmatic problem-solver with a can-do attitude
Project experience: track record of large-scale project involvement across complex business domains
Partners and vendors: experience with sourcing partners and vendors, multi-stream activities across external teams, and engineering metrics such as velocity, burndown, capacity management, planning, and forecasting
Governance and policies: experience in data science and data engineering governance, policies and oversight
Bonus points for: experience with dbt, Dagster, Terraform
Compensation and diversity Due to legal reasons we are obliged to disclose the minimum salary according to the collective agreement for this position, which is EUR 2,535 gross per month. However, our attractive compensation package is based on market-oriented salaries and is therefore significantly above the stated minimum salary.
