Apply for the Master Thesis titled Mixed-Integer Optimization for Model Predictive Control Algorithms at AIT Austrian Institute of Technology—Austria’s largest research and technology organisation dedicated to solving big challenges.
Responsibilities
* Conduct a comprehensive literature review on solution methods and solvers for mixed-integer optimization problems.
* Formulate and solve a state‑space optimal control problem with both continuous and discrete inputs for a continuous heat‑treatment line.
* Develop and evaluate a solution algorithm, selecting or crafting a method based on realistic performance metrics.
* Implement the solution in Matlab (and optionally Python) and perform closed‑loop simulations of an MPC tracking strategy for strip temperature control.
* Analyze results, present findings, and discuss them with interdisciplinary experts in mathematics, informatics, physics, control and mechanical engineering.
Qualifications
* Ongoing master’s studies in automation & control, technical mathematics, technical informatics or a comparable technical field.
* Excellent knowledge of optimisation techniques.
* Strong proficiency in Matlab and Python.
* Excellent technical understanding and analytical capabilities.
* Enjoyment of application‑oriented industrial questions.
* High level of commitment and team spirit.
* Good knowledge of German and/or English in speaking and writing.
What to Expect
* Duration: approximately 6 months.
* EUR 603 gross per month for 12 hours per week, aligned with the collective agreement.
