Description
We are seeking a dedicated volunteer to serve as the Main Cook to support the 2026 Second Vajra Yoga of Kālachakra Empowerment, Teachings and Retreat at Dzokden Kalapa taking place from August 11 – 21, 2026. Service during the entire retreat is highly preferred; accommodations may be available if a full commitment is not possible.
Timing: ~12 days – Sunday, August 9 (arrival) through Friday, August 21 – evening or Saturday, August 22 – morning (departure).
Hours: 8 hours a day for 12 days, total 96 hours onsite + 24 hours preparation beforehand = 120 hours total. (Note: This role also counts for EAP).
Responsibilities
* Prepare breakfast, a varied, nourishing lunch, and a light dinner for a group of 25–35 retreatants.
* Provide vegetarian meals with vegan and gluten‑free alternatives.
* Set up daily menus and create shopping lists (calculating quantities).
* Manage the cooking team: one full‑time Cook Helper and one hour daily meetings with Karma Yoga group of retreatants for meal preparation.
* Conduct final deep cleaning of kitchen, washroom, and dining hall after the retreat.
* Coordinate with experienced cooks from past retreats if desired.
Skills & Qualifications
* Hospitality and cooking experience.
* Willingness to help the retreat in this role.
* Prior experience preparing medium to large‑size groups (helpful but not mandatory).
* Ability to work independently and collaborate with staff and volunteers.
* Good communication, organization, diligence, and flexibility.
What Dzokden Kalapa Offers
During your stay, you will have access to all areas of the retreat center (except the Kālachakra Temple where retreatants practice). External volunteers can use electronic devices and the internet. If you commit to the full volunteering period, we can provide free access to an online course or recorded retreat at our digital learning center, and those with prior 2nd Vajra Yoga experience may attend any temple sessions for free.
