Lead Principal Engineer – Integrated Photonics, Trapped Ion Quantum Computing
Research & Development – Lead integrated photonics architecture and system design for trapped‑ion quantum computing platforms.
Key Responsibilities
* Define and drive integrated photonics architectures for trapped ion systems
* Design photonic interfaces between room temperature laser sources and the cryogenic ion traps
* Architect and realise on‑chip photonic components optimized for VIS wavelengths, low loss and minimal stray light
* Lead precision optical assembly for cryogenic modules
* Specify and execute metrology and validation at room temperature and cryogenic UHV conditions
* Drive system‑level trade‑offs and roadmaps for integrated photonics in trapped‑ion modules
* Mentor and lead junior engineers, write technical documentation, and contribute to patents and publications
* Enable scalable cryogenic trapped‑ion quantum computing through robust integrated photonics
Qualifications & Skills
* University degree in Physics, Photonics, or a closely related field (PhD preferred)
* 10+ years of hands‑on experience in photonics, optics, and/or precision assembly
* Experience with trapped‑ion experiments and deep understanding of their requirements is a plus
* Proficiency with optical design and analysis tools and thermomechanical modelling
* Direct experience with the characterization and verification of photonic hardware, including cryogenic measurements and reliability of thermal cycling
* Strong leadership, collaboration, and cross‑functional abilities to interface with physicists, system engineers, fabrication partners and project managers
We offer competitive salaries and additional benefits based on your performance, experience and qualification. The employment is in accordance with the collective salary and wage agreement for employees of the electrical and electronics industry, employment group J. Monthly salary is paid 14 times p.a. Additional compensation is provided depending on your expertise and skills.
