The Department of Neurology aims to establish a leading data-driven neurology program. The young and growing research group at the TT-Stelle – Transformative Health Care, with a focus on technology in medicine (Head: Dr. Jeanette Tas), we are seeking a motivated and talented university assistant with a doctorate/Ph.D. (Data Scientist) who will actively help shape the data infrastructure of the Neurology Department, particularly the Neurological Intensive Care Unit.
Together with an interdisciplinary team of experts in artificial intelligence, medicine, IT, nursing, medical specialties, and industry partners, we are developing a neurological data hub that brings together research, clinical care, and digital innovation. You will have the opportunity to play a leading role in establishing the neurology data hub and developing an independent scientific profile, while gaining access to unique multimodal clinical and research datasets from neurology and neurocritical care.
This position offers the opportunity to actively shape the digital transformation of neurology and to translate innovative approaches in the fields of data science, artificial intelligence, and multimodal neuromonitoring into clinical practice. For this exciting, forward-looking role, we are seeking a dedicated researcher with an interest in clinical data, modern data infrastructure, and translational research.
Job Duties:
* Help build a new neurological data hub to integrate data collected during routine patient care (clinical data, imaging, and multimodal neuromonitoring)
* Development of automated data pipelines for integrated clinical, monitoring, and imaging data
* Collaboration on innovative research projects in the fields of artificial intelligence, digital medicine, and neurointensive care
* Implementation of strategies for data quality, anonymization, discoverability, and data exchange
* Documentation and standardization of software, device, and data integration processes to create a sustainable and transferable infrastructure
* Development and expansion of research databases for neurological and neurocritical care projects
* Evaluation, testing, and further development of software solutions for multimodal neuromonitoring (e.g., PERSYST, Moberg Analytics)
* Development and refinement of dashboards for the real-time visualization of multimodal monitoring data at the patient's bedside to support clinical decision-making
* Developing an independent research profile in the field of data science
* Independent management of research projects within a team, including planning, methodological implementation, documentation, analysis, and interpretation of scientific questions
* Exploring new interdisciplinary research areas through collaborative projects with national and international partners
* Compilation, analysis, interpretation, and publication of scientific data in international journals, as well as presentation of the results at scientific conferences
* Securing external funding and developing and leading independent research projects
* Maintaining and expanding academic networks within and outside Johannes Kepler University
* Contact person for students in the field of data science
* Supervision of undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and PhD students
* Teaching Assistance
Your Qualifications:
* The successful candidate must hold a completed doctoral/Ph.D. degree in data science, bioinformatics, computer science, biomedical engineering, medical technology, electrical engineering, physics, or a related field
* Programming skills in MATLAB, Python, or similar programming languages
* Advanced IT skills are a plus (e.g., HL7 interfaces, SQL databases, network and device integration)
* Knowledge of neurology or neurocritical care is welcome, but not required
* Experience in university teaching is a plus
* Previous experience in securing competitive external funding is desirable
* Excellent English skills (at least C1 level); German skills at least at the B2/C1 level or a willingness to improve them in the near future
