Overview
The University of Salzburg invites applications for a tenured full professorship in:
Classical Philology/Latin Studies
The position will become available in the Department of Classics, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, with an anticipated start date around October 1, 2026. The appointee is expected to represent Latin Studies in teaching and to demonstrate outstanding research achievements in at least one period of ancient Latin literature.
The University of Salzburg supports interdisciplinary collaboration across the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the broader university community, including initiatives such as the Interdisciplinary Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (IZMF), the Centre for Jewish Cultural History (ZJK), and the civil society and research collaboration CIVIS.
Responsibilities
* Academic research and publication activities in the field of Latin Studies with a focus on late antique literature
* Academic leadership and further development of the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum (CSEL)
* Teaching and supervision of theses and dissertations
* Participation in research and teaching collaborations within the university and with partner institutions
* Promotion and support of junior researchers
* Participation in university committees and academic self-governance
* Initiation of and participation in third-party funded projects and third-mission activities
Qualifications
* A relevant domestic or equivalent foreign university degree (doctorate, PhD)
* Relevant habilitation (venia docendi/venia legendi) or equivalent qualification
* Outstanding achievements in research appropriate to academic age and biography
* Pedagogical and university teaching aptitude
* Proven ability to manage a university unit
* Involvement in the scientific community (e.g. peer review, international conferences)
* Excellent written and spoken German and English language skills
Additional requirements
* Willingness to engage with the leadership of the CSEL
* Publications on literary topics, including post-antique Latin literature, are preferred
* Willingness to participate in interdisciplinary research initiatives
* Experience in science management and securing third-party funding
* Leadership willingness and ability to participate in university self-administration
* Teamwork, collaboration, and social skills
* Gender and diversity awareness in research, teaching, and leadership
Salary and employment terms
The University hires professors on a full-time, tenured basis under Austrian laws. Salary is based on applicable collective agreements; the minimum base is €6,604.30 before taxes (14 monthly payments).
