Position

The University of Salzburg invites applications for a tenured full professorship in:

Classical Philology/Latin Studies

The position will become available in the Department of Classics, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, at the earliest possible date, presumably as of October 1, 2026.

The position holder is expected to represent Latin Studies in their entirety in teaching and to be able to demonstrate outstanding research achievements in at least one period of ancient Latin literature.

At the University of Salzburg, Classical Philology (and Latin Studies with a focus on late antique literature and the edition project Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum / CSEL) is part of the Department of Classics, together with Ancient History, Classical Archaeology and Jewish Studies. Next to Classics, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities consists of the following departments: English and American Studies; German Studies; Art History, Musicology and Dance Studies; Linguistics; Romance Studies and Slavonic Studies. The future position holder will play a key role in shaping interdisciplinary exchange within the faculty and be an important cooperation partner for university-wide projects.

In addition to teaching Latin (as part of the University’s Teacher’s Training programme for Latin), the future position holder will be involved in several interdisciplinary study programmes (e.g. BA Classics, MA Classics, MA Literary and Cultural Studies, supplementary studies in Medieval and Early Modern Studies with a focus on Digital Humanities, relevant doctoral programmes).


Areas of responsibility

* Academic research and publication activities in the field of Latin Studies with a focus on late antique literature;
* Academic leadership and further development of the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum (CSEL);
* Teaching and supervision of theses and dissertations;
* Participation in research and teaching collaborations at the University of Salzburg (including the European university alliance CIVIS) such as the Interdisciplinary Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies (“Interdisziplinäres Zentrum für Mittelalter und Frühneuzeit”, IZMF), the Centre for Jewish Cultural History (“Zentrum für Jüdische Kulturgeschichte”, ZJK) and the inter-university institution Science and Art (“Wissenschaft und Kunst”);
* Promotion and support of junior researchers;
* Collaboration in university committees and in academic self-governance;
* Initiation of and participation in third-party funded projects and third mission activities.


General employment requirements

* A relevant domestic or equivalent foreign university degree (doctorate, PhD);
* Relevant habilitation (venia docendi/venia legendi) or an equivalent scientific qualification;
* Outstanding achievements in research, commensurate with academic age and biography;
* Pedagogical and university teaching aptitude;
* Competence in managing a university institution;
* Proof of involvement in the scientific community (e.g. activity as a peer reviewer, participation in international conferences);
* Excellent written and spoken German and English language skills.


Additional requirements

* Willingness and ability to be familiarised with the academic leadership of the CSEL;
* Ideally, publications on literary topics, including post-antique periods of Latin literature;
* Willingness and ability to participate in interdisciplinary research institutions at the University of Salzburg;
* Experience in modern science management and in acquiring third-party funding;
* Willingness and ability to be involved in university self-administration and assume leadership roles;
* Willingness and ability to be involved in training programmes and other third mission activities;
* Digital skills;
* Ability to work in a team, willingness to cooperate, and social skills;
* Gender and diversity skills in research, teaching and university leadership roles.


Employment terms and salary

The university hires professors full time on tenured contracts according to the Austrian Universities Act, the Austrian Salaried Employees Act (Angestelltengesetz) and Collective Bargaining Agreement for University Employees (A1 salary schedule). The basis of salary negotiations is the required legal minimum of € 6.604,30 before taxes (in 14 monthly payments).
