Internship Program: The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree.
The purpose of the programme is to provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole, and benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students.
Organizational Setting
The Director General's Office (DGO) provides leadership and coordination for all IAEA activities. The Office for Public Information and Communication provides accurate information and fosters public understanding. The Media, Multimedia and Public Outreach Section has corporate responsibility for relations with media and public, producing audio and video materials.
Main Purpose
Provide the holder with an opportunity to gain practical work experience in an international organization. The training provided should benefit the intern and the divisional programme in which he/she works.
Functions / Key Results Expected
* Support the daily production of the Internal News Review, scanning online resources for IAEA news and compiling them into a package under the supervision of a Press Officer.
* Scan multilingual news, starting in the afternoon and concluding early in the morning under time pressure to meet delivery deadlines.
* Provide special news packages when requested, e.g., following Board of Governors' meetings.
* Undertake research and writing assignments.
* Transcribe Director General press conferences and interviews, sometimes under time pressure.
* Assist in preparations for, and provide support to, the Press Office during Board of Governors' meetings and the IAEA General Conference.
* Assist in collecting statistics about the Section's work and contribute to the analysis of its impact, using measurement tools.
* Assist in organizing the IAEA's participation in the annual UN Shadowing Programme and other outreach events.
* Take on other tasks to support the general work of the IAEA Press Office.
Qualifications and Experience
* University Degree in Journalism, International Relations, or relevant discipline.
* Knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), Adobe PDF.
* General knowledge of United Nations System, non‑proliferation, nuclear power, energy or climate change issues – an asset.
* Experience in writing and editing press releases, news features and video scripts – an asset.
Applicant Eligibility
* Minimum age 20 years.
* Completed at least three years of full‑time university studies toward a first degree.
* May apply up to one year after completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
* Must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.
* Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
* Must attach two signed letters of recommendation.
