The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).
The purpose of the programme is:
* To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;
* To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.
The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.
Organizational Setting
The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA's Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme's objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.
The objective of the Division of Human Health is to enhance the capabilities of Member States to address needs related to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of health problems through the development and application of nuclear techniques within a framework of quality assurance.
The Dosimetry and Medical Radiation Physics Section (DMRP) is one of four Sections in the Division of Human Health. It is responsible for quality assurance (QA) and metrology in radiation medicine. The Section operates the Dosimetry Laboratory (DOL) located in Seibersdorf. The objective of DOL is to improve the accuracy of dosimetry in radiation medicine and radiation protection in Member States. This is mainly done through the provision of calibration and postal dose audit services, by training of personnel from SSDLs in radiation dosimetry, and by arranging inter-laboratory comparisons for various radiation dosimetry quantities. The dosimetry services are operated under a stringent quality management system (QMS) that has been reviewed and approved internationally.
Main Purpose
As an intern in the DMRP Section, the incumbent will gain insight into the functioning of an international organization and the principles of programme implementation. The intern will assist with a range of tasks supporting the implementation and optimization of tools used to monitor DMRP's achievements, including databases and dashboards. The intern will also provide support in the organization and preparation of the upcoming IDOS 2026 Conference, which will take place from 5 to 9 October 2026.
Functions / Key Results Expected
* Provide support in the development of tools to monitor the implementation of DMRP's subprogramme.
* Provide support in the development of tools to analyse and assess DMRP's achievements and results.
* Contribute to the development of tools aimed at optimizing and streamlining MRP's processes, including through the application of artificial intelligence (AI).
* Contribute to the development of web tools to display relevant information in the field of Medical Physics to Member States.
* Support the organization and preparation of the IDOS 2026 Conference.
* Provide support to other activities of the Section, including the development of training materials, organization of consultancy meetings, and preparation of publications and knowledge products.
Qualifications and Experience
* University Degree in Computer Science, Radiation Physics or related subjects
* Experience in computer science, programming and machine learning
Applicant Eligibility
* Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
* Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
* Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.
* Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
* Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
